3 groups to meet new people in New York City

Oct 18, 2022

I’ve been living in the United States for four years. Before that, I moved from my hometown to the biggest city in Brazil, São Paulo. It was only a 6 hour’s drive, but I felt how hard it can be to build new relationships.

I didn’t know many people in São Paulo, and it was challenging to find new friends. When I arrived in New York, I didn’t know anyone. Meeting people away from your culture and in another language is even more challenging.

Last Saturday, I was lucky to attend the Create & Cultivate small business summit in NYC. I was greatly surprised by the diversity I saw on the stage during the event. For the first time, I felt entirely represented as a small businesswoman and an immigrant.

Most of the time, we arrive in a new country with no connections, which affects us personally and professionally. I’ve been looking for places to build genuine relationships and want to share some of the women’s groups I found in NYC.

  1. PodHer was founded by a Brazilian dancer. It promotes networking events and discusses mental, physical, and financial health.
  2. The Camaraderie was founded by an Australian entrepreneur. The group offers memberships and promotes weekly gatherings and weekend getaways for members and non-members.
  3. On.Together is the newest group on the list. Founded by Brazilians, the group launched its first event with sold-out tickets. It is open to women.

I know it is scary to be the new kid on the block, but since you made your way to a new city, try to open your mind to new people and cultures.
