The power of making decisions
Dec 13, 2022
Who wants everything has nothing – teaches us a Brazilian saying. Like most popular knowledge, this one also makes sense. Choosing one path for your life is to exclude the other infinite possibilities. It’s taking responsibility for who you are and your choices’ consequences. It’s focusing your energy on making something work and insisting until you get it. Decisions are powerful.
For a long time, it was difficult to “close the doors” to all the possibilities that life offered me. I used to think that not deciding left me free to go in any direction. I had many fears, like failing and being rejected, to name a few. I used to leave my decisions in other people’s hands because I didn’t want to make a mistake.
Fortunately, I understood that not making choices is settling for the path someone else chose for you. Last week, I asked on my Instagram the most challenging part of making decisions, and I got questions running around in my head for years. Insecurity, fear of judgment, and change are the points that caught my attention both on Insta and in life.
Decisions run the world
I wanted to be a part of something big from a very early age. I wished to get out of my city, see the world, be where decisions are made and feel at the center of everything. Today, I live in New York City, where I always wanted to be without even knowing it. But living here means not living near my friends and family. Fulfilling this dream is giving up a life that would not be bad.
This is just one of the many examples I went through in the first months of adapting to my new reality. I wanted to be in the United States with my life in Brazil. In the middle of two cities separated by thousands of kilometers. Things started to look up when I decided to have a complete life in New York City.
Leaving your decisions in the hands of others is to stay, forever, in the middle of a path that is not yours.
